A day in the life of a BRIDGE JUMPER
BRIDGE JUMPING-GERMAN STYLE
A STORY BY...ANTHONY KASPER
So like any good/dumb story this one starts out on a sunny June day. It was summer of 2003 and I was 19. Now I noticed on your website that you have a video of the highway bridge in NANAIMO BC CANADA. Now dont get me wrong that bridge is pro, ive jumped that many times, but the main event there is about 100 feet back from that, a train bridge that, from what ive found in books, is between 85-95 feet(20-30 feet higher than the highway bridge). Anyways me and a couple friends were at the river, just hanging out, having a few sodas and swimming. Now its not too often you see someone attempt the train bridge, but that day we saw a dude do it 3 times. I went off on my friends how dumb this guy was and how only an idiot would jump that (a few people have died doing it) well a few hours later I saw myself standing on the bridge just to see how high it looked from up there. At this point i wasn't even dressed for swimming, but once i was up there i figured if i was ever going to make that jump nows the time. I started to strip back to my shorts as my friends looked at me confused...I told them I have to try it. They didn't really believe me. I took no more than 30 seconds to scope the deepest landing water...stepped back counted out loud to 3, and jumped...IT WAS AMAZING the freefall and was unmatched by any jump i took before it. The LANDING now that was a different story...my feet were not quite together...kinda tappered one slightly in front of the other. My knee shot up right into my sternum(chest) and tore the cartilage, my left collarbone came completly dislodged, I compressed my spine pinched nerves in my lower back, pulled all the muscles on my left chest shoulder back and neck, and wore a bruise from my butt to my knees on both sides. That part of the river is in a canyon, so I had to swim a good 100 feet till I could get outta the river...when i got there all my friends were there waiting, they thought I broke my back, cause on the swim in my legs were so sore I didnt kick, and I used my left arm to "chicken wing" my collar bone. Every body was all freaked out except my bestfriend Patrick who was laughing hysterically. When I asked him what was so funny as I climbed out he said "I thought I watched you die" and laughed harder. We all went over to my place right away to kick back and laugh at how hurt i was After 3 days of having trouble pulling myself out of bed in the morning I finally went to the doctor to see what the damages were...his advice for me...if I couldnt stop myself from doing another jump for at least 6 months then he'd have to put my in an upper body cast to help my chest heal. We agreed to no more jumps that summer and I left...no casts and a prescription for some strong pain killers...
